Nwoye, Uba groups clash PDP clash

•Loyalists of the Ubas and Nwoye fighting at the Anambra State stand. Inset: An injured man.

Loyalists of the Peoples Democratic Party-recognised governorship candidate for the November 16 governorship election in Anambra State, Mr. Tony Nwoye, and that of court-recognised candidate, Sen. Andy Uba, engaged in a fight at the convention.
The event happened at the stand allotted to the state inside the square.
Few minutes before the arrival of President Goodluck Jonathan, the Anambra section of the venue was thrown into confusion when the two groups laying claim to the governorship ticket in the state exchanged blows for about an hour over sitting position.
The shouts and use of abusive words by the loyalists of the two men attracted delegates and journalists to the stand.
Andy Uba had come before the others with his supporters and was seated with the Minister of Aviation, Princess Stella Oduah. His brother, Chris Uba, was also seated close to him.
There was peace in the stand until the arrival of Nwoye, who came with his group, made up mostly of young men and women.
It was initially difficult for him to find a seat, but when he sighted one, he was told that it was reserved for a guest.
The youths told Andy Uba that he was serving a suspension from the party and that he ought not be at the event.
Andy, who is a serving senator from the state, remained silent, but his brother asserted that the suspension had been lifted by a court judgment.
His explanation did not appease the already charged youths as the shouting match degenerated into a brawl when one of the youths pushed Chris and people behind him.
Chris however stood his ground and the exchange of punches and blows continued among their supporters.
Sensing danger, security agents attached to Oduah tactically moved the minister out of the scene to ensure that she was not hurt.
Efforts made by the few security men at the stand to stop the fight were resisted as the angry youths insisted that Andy must leave the scene before peace could reign. But Andy remained seated and did not utter a word.
The reinforcement of security men saved the day, while the arrival of Jonathan, who moved round the stands with some governors eventually stopped the feuding groups.
Nwoye was later seen seated beside the Uba brothers though a man sat in-between him and Chris.
B’Haram kills 24 members of civilian JTF

Boko Haram members

Suspected members of Boko Haram, ambushed and killed at least 24 members of a youth vigilante group who were on a mission to find and fight the sect in northeast Nigeria, a security official toldAssociated Press on Saturday.
Those who returned from Friday’s attack told officials that 36 other vigilantes were missing, the official said on condition of anonymity because he is not permitted to speak to the media.
“The vigilante youths numbering over 100 were on a mission to capture some Boko Haram terrorists in their camps around Kaleri, Shuwari, Maganari and Nannari villages around Monguno’s local government area, before they were ambushed by the terrorists,” he said.
The attack took place somewhere near Monguno town, 160 kilometers (100 miles) from the city of Maiduguri, the Borno state capital where the Boko Haram ideology sprang up some four years ago.
The vigilante group, known as the Civilian Joint Task Force, said its attackers were wearing military uniforms. The official said the Civilian-JTF usually gets a military escort when it goes on a search mission but that when the military did not arrive on time the vigilantes headed out.
They later told officials they saw three patrol vehicles painted in camouflage and approached them thinking they were the escorts. The sect members then opened fire, killing at least 24 Civilian-JTF members, the security operative said.
The Civilian-JTF has recently become a target for Boko Haram, an armed Islamic group that has been waging a bloody war in Africa’s most populous nation. Two attacks – one earlier in the week and the other last weekend – killed at least 20 members of the vigilante group, residents and an official said.
“We are getting too many attacks and our members’ deaths are on the rise. I am scared, and so are some of my friends in the vigilantes,” said Shehu Ibrahim, a member of Civilian-JTF. “We may back out if we are not protected.”
The state’s foremost monarch, the Shehu of Borno, Abubakar Garbai Alamin El-Kanemi, had requested financial and material support for the Civilian-JTF while attending a government meeting in the troubled city of Maiduguri.
Peoples Democratic Party falls apart

A major crisis on Saturday hit the ruling Peoples Democratic Party as seven governors and former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar formed a faction of the party at the national level.
The governors, who are members of the new faction, include Aliyu Wamakko (Sokoto); Babangida Aliyu (Niger); Rabiu Kwankwanso (Kano); Muritala Nyako (Adamawa); Abdulfatah Ahmed (Kwara); Sule Lamido (Jigawa) and Rotimi Amaechi (Rivers)
Also in the faction are an acting National Chairman, Kawu Baraje; a suspended National Secretary, Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola and a former National Deputy National Chairman, Dr. Sam Jaja.
The press conference at the Sheu Yar’Adua Centre Abuja, where the faction announced its emergence, was attended by many members of the national and state houses assembly.
The National Chairman of the faction, Baraje, said the leaders of the party came together to rescue it from undemocratic tendencies of “the former national chairman,” Bamanga Tukur.
He said, “We address you today as leaders of the PDP, who are worried by the increasing repression, restrictions of freedom of association, arbitrary suspension of members and other such violations of democratic principles by a faction of our party led by Tukur.”
He said they had done everything humanly possible to bring to the attention of critical stakeholders within the party to the dangers inherent in the course being charted by that leadership (Tukur),
The factional chairman said, “It has become very clear that the desperate permutations towards 2015 general elections have blinded certain people from the consequences of their actions.
“Not only has the constitution of the party been serially violated by Alhaji Tukur and fellow travelers, all the organs of the party have been rendered virtually ineffectual by a few people who act as though above the law.”
Baraje noted that the Presidency had been encouraging the Tukur- led faction.
“Unfortunately, it is obvious that that they get encouragement from the presidency whose old calculations are geared towards shutting out any real or imagined opposition ahead of the party’s presidential primaries for the 2015 elections.”
He said as leaders of the party, they considered it a sacred responsibility to save the PDP from the antics of a few desperadoes who had no democratic temperament and were bent on hijacking the party for selfish ends.
Baraje listed the violations of the Tukur-led faction as the changing of the date of the party’s convention without the approval of the National Executive Committee.
He said the PDP NEC at its last meeting approved July20, 2013 for the conduct of a special national convention.
The factional chairman said that date was changed to August 31 without reverting to NEC (the only authority vested with such powers) by a few people, apparently acting on the authority of the presidency.
He added, “Notwithstanding the fact that INEC had noted that the PDP congresses in nine states were not presently conducted, the illegal delegates from such states are being paraded at the so-called convention being held today (Saturday) in a cynical attempt to circumvent the law an further bring the name of the party to disrepute.
“In gross violation of the PDP constitution, which stipulates that the NEC meeting must hold at least once in a quarter, Tukur and a few people have been running the party like a personal fiefdom without recourse to that important decision-making organ of the party.
“The NEC of the party accepted the resignation of the former members of the NWC whose offices were affected by INEC observations based principally on the agreement that the affected officers would be returned to their respective offices at the convention.”
He said in spite of the NEC decision, the positions of the former officers had been given to “some Yes-men within the party.”
Baraje said in spite of INEC’s insistence that Senator Any Uba was the duly elected candidate of the party in Anambra State; the Bamanga Tukur-led executives announced the suspension of Uba and some other members close to him in defiance of subsisting court orders.
He also faulted the dismissal of a former National Chairman, Mr. Sam Jaja, by the Rivers State chapter of the party with the alleged connivance of the Tukur leadership.
He also cited the suspension of Amaechi and Wamakko.
He said, “Even when the illegal suspension of Sokoto State governor has been lifted, the Rivers governor remains purportedly suspended for no just cause.”
Baraje also said the dissolution of the Adamawa State chapter of the party was a clear abuse of power by Tukur, thus causing confusion in his home state.
The factional chairman said, “Given the foregoing, it is very clear that the Tukur leadership cannot guarantee for our millions of party members democracy anchored on free choice and the rule of law.
“We have therefore taken it upon ourselves to rescue the party from their dictatorial leadership.”
“It is indeed noteworthy that from 1999 to date, Nigerians have constantly voted the presidential candidates presented by our great party but not only does such trust come with enormous responsibility, we recognise that we cannot continue to take the people for granted.
“From now, the new leadership of the party under us will strive to build a fairer as well as a more transparent and accountable PDP that will put the interest of members and indeed all the people of Nigeria above that of one single individual.
“For all the members of our great party who may have become disillusioned by the anti-democratic tendencies of the Tukur leadership, there is a new lease of life in the horizon.
“It s a new day for the Peoples Democratic Party. As we take over the leadership of the PDP, our immediate priority is to revive the culture of robust debate of all contending issues while providing a level-playing field for all our members.”
In a swift reaction, Tukur promised that the party would deal with the governors at the appropriate time.
Tukur told journalists at the Eagle Square, that the governors were planning to defect to another party.
He said, “The PDP does not recognise any parallel party. Those who staged the walkout are all self-seeking and treacherous individuals pursuing neither regional nor religious agenda except their own agenda, except their own personal interest.
“Their attempt to create parallel party is illegal, unlawful as there are no crises within the PDP whatsoever.
“They were all active participants in the setting up of this convention.
“And many of them were with the President and rode with him to the convention venue and joined them in the salutation of all the delegates including their state delegates.”
“The PDP is studying the situation as it unfolds and will deal decisively as the situation warrants.
“It is obvious that they are creating crisis where there is none to give the impression that the party is divided. This in their thinking will allow them persuade loyal members of the National Assembly to cross carpet with them. We will resist this.”
Meanwhile, the Peoples Democratic Movement has saluted what it described as the bravery and statesmanship of the dissenting delegates of the PDP.
The National Chairman of PDM, Mr. Bashir Ibrahim, who spoke through his Media Advisor, Alaba Yusuf, said, “We appreciate their bold, brave and patriotic stand of these delegates for refusing to participate in an election which they knew gave no even playing ground to all stakeholders.’

Watch 14 Years-Old Girl Who Gave Birth To Triplets In Kenya
Fourteen-year-old Mwanaharabu Wamukoya of Harambee village in Kakamega County, Kenyawas admitted to Bungoma District Hospital on Saturday evening and had a Caesarean Section on Sunday to deliver the three baby boys.
Two of the new-borns weighed 1.5 kilogrammes while the third one weighed 1.3 kilogrammes.
Nursing officer-in-charge Mary Marumbu said the babies and their mother were in stable condition and ready to be discharged.
The father of the babies, a 16-year-old boy, is said to have taken off on learning that the girl had given birth to triplets. The teen is also a school dropout and does menial jobs. The arrival of the triplets is said to have distressed him.
“He has no ability to take care of the babies even if he was here. We are grateful to the government for scrapping off maternity fees because I will be free to go home once discharged. I would have been detained here if I had been asked to pay,” the teenage mother said.

ASUU strike: “Lecturers must renegotiate, we cannot implement 2009 agreement” – Farouk Lawan

Speaking with newsmen, he urged the lecturers to call off the strike and return to the negotiating table, while also calling out to prominent Nigerians to intervene in the matter, as both parties try to find solution to the ongoing strike.
Lawan said: “All of us certainly I believe must be concerned with the current strike that is going on and there is likely possibility that it will be a prolonged one. “Sometime, simply because of the pressure or the determination to get students back to classes, government agrees to certain things they knew then they may not be able to meet as easily as possible.
“This time, the issues were about what were agreed upon in 2009, just as it was with the 2009 strike that had issues of previous strikes embedded in it. “As long as there is no realistic appraisal of what is attainable, then we will always continue to face these problems but we cannot continue this way. “We all know that strikes undermine the quality of education system. “Strikes are equally tied to a situation that is already bad.
“Frequent strikes by academic unions and other unions within the university system and tertiary institutions increasingly add to this pressure.
“That is why I have always maintained that ASUU should be more ingenious in coming up with better ways of getting government to be more committed in improving the education system without necessarily going on strike. “Every society looks up to the universities for new ideas and Nigeria should not be an exception.
“ASUU, as the reservoir of knowledge, should begin to come up with new ways of getting government to do things without necessarily embarking on strikes that add to the problem that our educational system is already facing in this country.” The outspoken lawmaker also opined that ASUU members must go back to the negotiations table so as to come up with more realistic terms that would be implementable.
He added: “I know that the educations committees of the two chambers of the National Assembly have tried to broker understanding and currently there is some kind of negotiation taking place but every Nigerian should encourage ASUU to resume that negotiation so that the matter can be resolved and the lecturers can go back to classes and our children out there for us to have the opportunity of steady and stable educational system.”
PDP splits; Atiku, Amaechi and 6 other governors form new faction
The governors who left the convention with Atiku are: Governor Mu'azu Babangida Aliyu of Niger state, governor Sule Lamido of Jigawa State, governor Aliyu Wamakko of Sokoto state, governor Musa Kwankwaso of Kano state, and governor Abdulfatah Ahmed of Kwara state.
Governor Murtala Nyako of Adamawa and Rotimi Amaechi of Rivers state, who were barred from attending the convention, joined the other governors, Atiku, and Bukola Saraki in the new factional PDP.
After addressing an impromptu press conference explaining why they decided to form a new faction, officers were immediately elected. Abubakar Baraje was elected chairman, while former Osun State governor, Olagunsoye Oyinlola was elected Secretary.
So now there's a GEJ PDP and an Atiku PDP. Lol. Our leaders are comedians...

Swagggbook:Lagos State Govt buys back LCC's concession rights in Lekki-Epe Expressway
The Lagos State Government has announced its intention to buy back LCCs concession rights in the Eti-Osa Lekki-Epe Expressway. Find a press statement from the State Govt below..
The Lagos State Government wishes to state clearly that it has neither terminated nor cancelled the Concession Agreement it entered into with the Lekki Concession Company Limited (LCC) to reconstruct and expand the 49.36 km Eti-Osa Lekki-Epe Expressway.
To set the records straight, Lagos State Government is engaged in buying back the rights pertaining to the concession ahead of the 30-year period stipulated in the Design, Build, Operate and Transfer (DBOT) Concession Agreement. This is to be achieved by purchasing all the shares in LCC.The State Government came to this decision to buy back the rights in the light of several developments clearly not envisaged in the 2006 Concession Agreement (which became effective in 2008) a few of which are highlighted below.
The project, given its pioneering nature, had some underlying assumptions and market indicators under which the transaction was concluded which have since drastically changed in a manner that it can no longer be sustained in its current form. Such include the devaluation of the Naira and costs of construction.
The LCC, which is the special purpose vehicle representing the investors, formally brought it to the attention of the State Government that given the rapid rise in interest rates on local loans, and other cost parameters, it is compelled to raise tolls currently being charged at Toll Plaza One from
The Concessionaire also brought it to the attention of the State Government, that as provided for under the agreement, tolling would have to commence at Toll Plaza Two.
In addition, the Concessionaire indicated that unless it realised more income from increased rates at Toll Plaza One and commence tolling at the same rate per Car at Toll Plaza Two, it would not be able to meet its commitments to investors in the project and continue to fund completion of the remaining sections of the road.
Furthermore, the LCC stated that Toll Plaza Three, as contained in the Agreement, must be built and tolls collected for the continued viability of the project.
Under such circumstances, the Lagos State Government felt obliged to buy out the interests of the Concessionaire in advance of the hand-over date of 2038 under a mutual settlement option also expressly provided for in the Concession Agreement. This is after due consultation with all major stakeholders including the Lagos State House of Assembly based on various feedback and agitation made to the Government.
Contrary to the misleading reports by some sections of the media on Wednesday, August 27, 2013 from the State House of Assembly’s consideration and approval of the 2013 Supplementary Budget, the buy-back is not and does not amount to a “termination” or “cancellation” of the concession of Eti-Osa, Lekki-Epe Expressway.
The significance of the buy-back, for which the State Government deserves commendation, is that it allows the Government to take full control over the determination of the toll rates in order to continue to make it affordable for road users. The LCC shall therefore continue to operate as a fully commercial entity for the benefit of taxpayers and the larger society.
More importantly, it would also preserve the ability of the Government to complete and deliver the infrastructure by direct budget funding, which was also one of the reasons for the presentation of the Year 2013 Budget Re-Ordering to the State House of Assembly.
In addition LASG wishes to reaffirm its unflinching commitment to the adoption of PPP Model as a complementary policy thrust for the acceleration of infrastructure delivery towards improving the living standards of the populace. Lagos remains an investor friendly State that shall continue to ensure the sanctity of contracts, as in this case, in sustaining investors’ confidence in its investment climate as a preferred destination.
The general public is therefore enjoined to continue to cooperate with LCC's officials and operatives as it continues the expansion and construction works on the 49.36km Eti-Osa Lekki-Epe Expressway and the operations of the toll collection systems. LASG wishes you a safe and happy motoring experience on the modernised expressway with its associated free value added services such as 24/7 security patrol, vehicle break down recovery, ambulance services, amongst others.

Swagggbook:Yobo, Emenike out of Europa as CAS bans Fenerbahce

Nigerian duo of Joseph Yobo and Emmanuel Emenike are out of this season’s Europa Cup as their Turkish side Fenerbahce will be unable to compete in the Europa League this season. This comes after the Court of Arbitration for Sport upheld a UEFA-imposed two-year ban from European competition over a match-fixing scandal on Wednesday. Emenike just joined the team in the summer transfers.
With the International Olympic Committee vote on whether Istanbul, Madrid or Tokyo will host the 2020 Olympics due on Sept. 7, the timing of the announcement delivers another body blow to the tarnished image of Turkish sport.
The Turkish Athletics Federation earlier on Wednesday handed a two-year suspension to double European 100m hurdles champion Nevin Yanit for drugs violations, just weeks after similar bans were given to 31 other local athletes.
Fenerbahce said they would appeal the CAS decision in a Swiss federal court but the club’s shares took a beating following the decision, falling nearly 6 percent, before trimming losses to close 3.5 percent down at 24.60 lira.
Playing under appeal against the original ban, Fenerbahce were beaten 2-0 by Arsenal in the second leg of a Champions League playoff on Tuesday, losing the tie 5-0 on aggregate.
Normally a defeat at this stage would still guarantee a berth in the continent’s second tier competition but Fenerbahce will be barred from the Europa League following the CAS ruling.
Lausanne-based CAS said in a statement it had dismissed appeals filed by Fenerbahce and Ukraine’s Metalist Kharkiv, barred by UEFA over involvement in a domestic match-fixing case dating back to 2008.
“Fenerbahce SK is excluded from two editions of the UEFA club competitions,” CAS said in its ruling following a two-day hearing held at its headquarters on August 21-22.

Gov. Suntai Finally Speaks On Taraba Television

The brief address was however not live but through a video shown on the state-owned television station in Jalingo.
His failure to do so earlier and appear before the state House Assembly to formally intimate its members of his desire to resume work had created suspicions that he was incapable of continuing to function as the state governor.
Before the video was broadcast, he met with the lawmakers and inaugurated the newly appointed Secretary to the State Government, Timothy Kataps, as well as the Chief of Staff, Mallam Aminu Jika.
The governor, who is recuperating from injuries he sustained last October when a small aircraft he flew crashed, had earlier dissolved the state Executive Council, leaving only his special assistants.
In the address, Suntai commended the people of the state for their prayers and for standing by him in his moment of trial.
“I thank the people of Taraba State for standing by me and my family.I also thank the commissioners for holding the fort while I was away. Also enjoin all of you to continue to live in peace,” he said.
Suntai, who wore a sky blue suit and a stripe shirt, also congratulated the people on the 22nd anniversary of the state which was on August 27.
